Do variables get passed to the next screen after submit form

As a general rule I know that variables of each screen get passed to the next one if they are connected by the prototype link. My question is if the variables get passed even when there is no prototype link but the screen is connected by an action in the first screen that triggers the "go to" screen. 
And if they are not passed can I use the prototype link in combination with the "go to" screen?

The reason I ask this is also because I'm working on a user registration flow and it goes as follows:

1 The user fills email, password, picture ect.. and submit all this data in the first screen through a button market with [action:submit]. As returned data the function gives a the email field that gets marked in "selected data"
2 In the screen I ask the user to insert other text data and I use the email field from the previous screen to edit the user in my backend and add the new data 
3 problem is Bravo it seems that is not passing the variable to that screen
