Performance tips & tricks?

Archived from the Bravo community forum (2021–2026). Some answers may refer to older versions of Bravo.

I’ve been working on my app for a couple of weeks and having a blast. It’s a small app that displays Scores, Schedule, and Results from a local sports league. I’m using Airtable as a database. I’ve just shared with a few friends on TestFlight and although I’m happy to be this far along, the app is sloooooooow. Often 5+ seconds (one friend reported waiting a minute!) to load a simple list view of games. I’ve configured pagination to preload fewer entries which may have helped but not that much. All images are <10kb and otherwise it’s just serving up text.

Any tips to further optimize? I’m surprised it’s this slow given it’s a fairly tiny app at the moment!

Upvote.

In addition to pagination I also tried to optimize my API functions. However, while the duration of my APIs is kept within the 0.1-0.5s range, the loading time in the app is still a couple of seconds long. I’m a bit confused as to why that is.

@Valter Guerreiro thanks, I added that tag to any persistent app elements. Will see if that helps

@Valter Guerreiro That’s awesome. I’ve been on Bravo 2+ years and never did that.

Given the description, I’m assuming with a preload change you gotta send a new bundle to the app store? Not just a fast-push?

“The [preload] tag is designed to improve asset loading by including them in the App bundle, reducing the occurrence of loading spinners and provides a smoother user experience. Think of it as an offline mode for assets.”

Generally I will say on Bravo I’ve been getting complaints from users of slow speeds. I use Bravo & Xano (free account), so i’m not sure if the issue is with Xano too. But a paid Xano account is too expensive.

I hear supabase helps but i’m a bit too deep to do a backend change now.

Any tips?

@Alex Rothera yes you have to update the app on the stores.

Valter January 27, 2024

@Alex Rothera the problem its just becsuse once you open a page, the app have yo download everyting and connect tobthe backend. Now with the new tag you can have the pages already on the phones with no need to donwliad them, just the conection to the backend but in my experience now it is super fast and in some pages i have 200 binds..

Laura January 27, 2024

@Valter Guerreiro do you recommend adding the [preload] tag components or entire pages?

Valter January 28, 2024

@Laura Meng depend on your needs! In my case i place it on thr entire page

@Valter Guerreiro if I have a carousel with always the same options however it is design to change randomly every time it is being called, could I still use [preload] here ? example: restaurant category slide: hamburger, pizza, taco on next call pizza, hamburger, taco

Antonio January 28, 2024

@Valter Guerreiro some best practice examples would be great like don’t use if… or use if…

@Valter Guerreiro is it ok to also add [preload] to intro pages? and Lotties loading screen gif?

Alex January 30, 2024

@Valter Guerreiro Amazing. I can’t wait. Thanks for helping everyone here so much!

Liam January 30, 2024

@Valter Guerreiro just circling back to say thank you! Clearly this has been a common pain point which the [preload] tag is designed to improve. Appreciate you sharing your experience with all of us 🙂

@Valter Guerreiro let’s say a page where you have a some list views inside ?
