General Backend "quality of life" Questions

Archived from the Bravo community forum (2021–2026). Some answers may refer to older versions of Bravo.

Hi

Firstly, I want to thank the Bravo team directly before I ask my question. What an awesome team you guys have and I only get to benefit more as you all grow so very appreciated!

I just have a few "quality of life" questions I'd would love answers for.

  1.  What is the relationship of the user.id variable I find in Bravo between  your database (for reference the app I am working on currently authenticate via OAuth)
  2. APIs vs Webhooks? What is the main difference? Any examples or use cases? (please explain like I'm five 🙂 )
  3. I keep getting lost in the weeds of Biding data from user profile information and other databases I have made. From my point of view, I believe the app I'm working on is fairly simple binding structure but I seem to be missing some key API binding knowledge. Is there a place specifically I can reference via documentation that goes over a comprehensive?

Again, I appreciate the community provided and I look forward to what can come from this!

  1.  Every time you add new data to your Airtable, just add the user.id in the POST request too. Your Airtable could look something like this: https://airtable.com/shrtlMdLsVj4Ya2k0
There is a video of mine coming out tomorrow that will shed some light on the topic. Make sure you are subscribed to the Bravo Studio YT channel ;)
  2. APIs and webhooks can't be compared, they are completely different things. AN API is more like a huge construct with different subtopics. Best you just read a professional definition or here is a video about APIs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIG0\_EmvkqE
A webhook can be called like a request URL. So imagine opening a website in your browser (e.g. google.com). The server then notices "Oh hey, Ozy just called me, what should I do now?" This event then triggers some sort of function on the server. For example, in this video I use a webhook to do some additional logic in Integromat before calling the Airtable API: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQZuoTcQ-5M
I hope this is not too simplified so it is wrong but you should get an idea.
  3. I would recommend to watch some of our "building full apps" videos to get a grasp of how it works. Here is a video I made about documentation for once you want to dig deeper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt6NB9h2JIg

You are a rockstar! Thank you for the resources and advice. Can’t wait till this app is done and kicking butt! Much Appreciate I’ll check those out now. And yes I was already subscribed 😄.

It was great! Watched a soon as it dropped. I am actually having to pivot a bit on my projects backend to Xano. So have to learn another authentication system I wonder how this will differ with auth tokens.

The good thing is: It won't. You can still set up the DB exactly as explained in the video

That is very pleasing to hear. I am almost done with my MVP and features list. This thread was much help!
