I currently use the URL: http://wa.me/XXXXXXXXXXXX to connect directly to the WhatsApp app number.
iOS all the sudden stoped working and it redirects the user to a website api.whatsapp.com where it asks the user if they want to connect to the app and finally saying "it seems you do not have the app installed" the app is installed (tried on many phones, same result)
Read an article online where they suggest to use this url instead:
whatsapp://send?phone=xxxxxxxxxxxx
although this links if on any place of my phone would link me successfully to the app, Bravo studio, does not connect me to the app (on iOS)
Has anyone else experienced this? if so, what have you tried or what has worked for you?

Hey Antonio, we always recommend using https when possible instead of a custom scheme url like whatsapp://, mostly because we can only support some of these custom scheme url, Apple forces to declare for each app which custom url schemes will be used.
Said that as whatsapp is one of the most common apps used, we included it, so should work fine using whatsapp:// from now. It's already available on new builds and will be available on next vision version too.
Thank you for your reply, although the URL: http://wa.me/XXXXXXXXXXXX is my first option and currently working on the Android phone, the same URL is not working properly on iOS and rerouting the user to WhatsApp api website automatically: api.whatsapp.com
